Gawa Undi Calls for Cross-Border Peace

Paramount Chief Gawa Undi of the Chewa people in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique has called for continued efforts to build peace and unity among the three countries, describing them as essential foundations for national development.

Speaking during the 2026 Kulamba Traditional Ceremony at Mkaika in Katete District, in a speech read on his behalf by Chewa Foundation National Secretary Reuben Kamanga, the Paramount Chief urged the three nations to build on the peace and unity they have long enjoyed and to work together for the common good of people across their shared borders. This year's ceremony was held under the theme "Unity Beyond Borders."

He also appealed to his subjects to store sufficient food for household consumption ahead of the anticipated drought in the coming season, and encouraged traditional leaders to promote investment in education among their people.

Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people, who graced the ceremony, said traditional institutions remain central to the governance of the country. In a speech read on his behalf by Bemba Royal Establishment Secretary Richard Mukuka, he acknowledged Government support to traditional institutions but stressed that more still needs to be done. He added that traditional ceremonies play an important role in healing divisions created by politics.

Meanwhile, Senior Chief Nzamane, representing the Ngoni Royal Establishment, commended Paramount Chief Gawa Undi for promoting peace, unity and inclusivity through the ceremony, describing it as a unifying platform for communities across the region.
