IG Orders Arrests Over Election Violence, Probes Mongu Teargas Incident

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba has ordered the immediate arrest of everyone involved in recent political violence, warning that no politician or cadre will escape prosecution on account of their party.

Musamba said the police had noted with concern the violence recorded in Shibuyunji, Livingstone and Luampa districts, describing such incidents as unacceptable in a democratic country. He has directed commanding officers in the affected areas to ensure all those behind the attacks are apprehended and taken to court without delay, stressing that political affiliation would shield no one from the law. "The law will be applied fairly, professionally and impartially, without regard to political affiliation," he warned.

The police chief also announced a comprehensive review of a public order operation in Mongu and Kalabo districts, where officers fired teargas during a Tonse–Pamodzi Alliance campaign rally. The review, he said, would establish whether the operation was conducted lawfully and in line with professional policing standards, while also examining the conduct of political supporters who allegedly confronted officers during the exercise.

Musamba moved to dismiss social media reports claiming that someone had died in the Mongu incident, confirming that no death had been recorded.

Echoing President Hakainde Hichilema's warning, he said violence, intimidation and lawlessness by any party or supporter would not be tolerated as the country heads towards next week's general election. He urged all political players to campaign peacefully, pledging that the Zambia Police Service remained committed to a safe environment for every contestant and voter.
