K4 Billion Deal Signed to Upgrade Kabwe–Ngabwe Road

The Road Development Agency has signed contracts worth over K4 billion to upgrade the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road, in one of the largest road infrastructure investments in Central Province in recent years.

The project is split into two lots. Lot one covers 75 kilometres of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road and 10 kilometres of urban roads in Kabwe District at a cost of just under K2 billion. Lot two covers 80 kilometres of the same corridor plus 10 kilometres of urban roads in Ngabwe District at a cost of just over K2.1 billion. Both contracts carry a 24-month implementation period.

RDA Chief Executive Officer Engineer Nelson Chuma said the signing marks another milestone in government's investment in strategic transport infrastructure, describing the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road as a critical corridor that has for years left road users stranded - particularly during the rainy season when sections become impassable.

He said once upgraded, the road will provide a reliable all-weather route, reducing travel time, lowering vehicle operating costs and opening up access to markets for agricultural produce from the region. Mining, tourism and commerce are also expected to benefit.

Mr Chuma said RDA will undertake rigorous supervision throughout the construction period to ensure the project is delivered on time, within budget and to the required standard.

One of the contractors, Onno Munshya, pledged to deliver a quality outcome. "The benefits that will come from that road will go far beyond the people of Ngabwe," he said.
