Monze–Niko Road Nears Completion As Works Reach 91%

Construction of the Monze–Niko Road has reached 91% completion, with the Road Development Agency (RDA) confirming that the project remains on course for completion by 21 August 2026.

Chief Hamusonde of Monze District has expressed gratitude to the Government for undertaking the road project, describing it as a major boost to development within his chiefdom. He said the improved road network has enhanced movement for local communities and commended the high standard of workmanship and quality of materials used during construction.

Residents and motorists in Namwala District have also welcomed the project, citing the positive impact it has had on their daily lives. Local resident Bob Chidyayi said the upgraded road has significantly improved access to essential services, including healthcare facilities, while making it easier for farmers to transport their produce to markets.

Motorist Hamwiinga Hamusonde noted that journeys between Niko and Monze Town, which previously took more than three hours due to poor road conditions, have been greatly reduced.

RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa said that 66.5 kilometres of the 71-kilometre road have now been completed, representing 91% of the overall project. He reaffirmed the agency's commitment to handing over the completed road by 21 August 2026.

Meanwhile, RDA Southern Province Engineer Namalala Chilala disclosed that the project is valued at approximately K1.1 billion. He said the works include the construction of the Bweengwa Bridge and added that the road has been engineered to serve for between 15 and 20 years under normal operating conditions.
