Six Lanes Take Shape On Great East Road

Work to widen Lusaka's Great East Road from four lanes to six is now 40 per cent complete, with contractors on course to finish by the end of November 2026.

The stretch under construction runs roughly 6.96 kilometres from the Munali Flyover to the Airport Roundabout. Since work started in May 2026, crews have moved at a steady pace, and asphalt has already been laid on the section linking the Airport Roundabout to the Chelston Tank area.

Misheck Daka, Assistant Resident Engineer at ZULU Burrow Consulting Limited, confirmed that U-turns have been built into the completed portion of the carriageway, giving drivers more flexibility as the wider layout takes shape.

Reaction from road users has been positive. Motorists say the extra lanes should ease the daily build-up of traffic along one of the capital's busiest corridors and cut journey times for commuters heading in and out of the city.

The scheme sits within the wider 40-kilometre Lusaka Township Roads Upgrade Project, which is being delivered by the Ministry of Local Government. The programme is designed to modernise urban road infrastructure and relieve congestion across Lusaka, with the Great East Road corridor among its highest-profile components given the volume of traffic it carries between Munali Roundabout and the airport.
