Israeli Doctors Arrive to Conduct Specialised Surgeries and Train Doctors in Choma
A group of multi-disciplinary Israeli doctors has arrived in Zambia to operate at Choma General Hospital in Southern Province. Five doctors arrived in Lusaka and are primarily there to perform specialised surgeries whilst also training local doctors in these fields.
The Israeli doctors are from Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Centre and are specialists in their respective disciplines. The operations they conduct at Choma General Hospital will help strengthen Zambia's capacity to perform heart surgeries in the future by providing advanced training to local medical professionals.
Israel's Ambassador to Zambia, Ofra Farhi, commented that "this is a huge operation" and said she hoped "Zambia could become an original hub for heart surgeries for children."
The doctors specialise in gynaecology, ophthalmology, general surgery and paediatrics, and will be operating at Choma General Hospital for the next three days. There are already programmes in Zambia inspired by Israel, including epilepsy research in Eastern Province.
The Israeli doctors have also brought and donated specialist equipment that will enhance the quality of operations and surgeries Zambian doctors can undertake in the future.
