Government Institutions Embrace Solar Power to Boost Energy Security
Five government institutions in Lusaka have completed the installation of solar power systems as part of efforts to promote renewable energy use and improve electricity reliability in public facilities.
The institutions benefiting from the initiative are the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA), the National Assembly, the National Heart Hospital, Matero Level One Hospital and Kanyama Level One Hospital.
The project is being implemented by ZESCO through its subsidiary, Kiyona Energy Limited, as part of the Government’s drive to increase the adoption of clean energy solutions.
Kiyona Energy Chief Executive Officer Clement Siame said the newly installed solar systems are designed to generate more electricity than the institutions require, allowing excess power to be supplied to the national grid.
Speaking during a tour of Matero Level One Hospital in Lusaka, Mr Siame said the additional electricity generated would support surrounding communities while reducing pressure on the country’s hydroelectric power supply.
He explained that each Level One Hospital is expected to generate approximately 350 kilowatts of solar power, compared to an average consumption of about 150 kilowatts.
Mr Siame said the initiative would contribute to improved energy security by diversifying the country’s power sources and reducing reliance on hydroelectric generation.
Meanwhile, Matero Level One Hospital Acting Senior Medical Superintendent Mitesh Patel said the solar installation would provide the facility with a more dependable electricity supply and help improve healthcare service delivery.
