Chisamba Solar Plant Exceeds Expectations
The 100-megawatt Chisamba Solar Plant has generated more than 187.69 gigawatt-hours of electricity during its first year or operation.
Kariba North Bank Extension (KNBE) Power Corporation Chief Executive Officer Boyd Kanchela said the plant has gone beyond expectations by supplying electricity to households and industries all over the nation.
Mr. Kanchela reported to ZNBC News that the project’s performance underscores that solar energy is a trusted and cost-effective alternative that can help reduce Zambia’s dependence on hydroelectric power.
He added that the corporation wishes to add two more solar power projects through join ventures and public-private partnerships, each expected to attract between 85 and 90 million United States dollars in investment.
Mr Kanchela said the Chisamba Solar Power Plant has reduced carbon emissions by 194.7 kilotonnes, opened up jobs for the local community and will further support health, education and water projects through its corporate social responsibility programme.
