Copperbelt Councils Urged to Accelerate Solar Energy Rollout

Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Lawrence Mwanza has instructed all local authorities in the province to fast-track the implementation of the Presidential Constituency Solar Energy Initiative, emphasising the need for swift progress on the project.

Mwanza noted that councils should move without delay, pointing out that funding for the programme is already secured through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). He stressed that the availability of financing removes a key barrier that might otherwise slow down implementation.

According to reports received by his office, all ten councils across the Copperbelt Province have already identified and secured suitable land earmarked for the solar energy installations. This development marks a significant step forward in the rollout of the initiative, which is intended to expand access to alternative and sustainable energy sources.

Mwanza further disclosed that site inspections will be conducted in the near future to assess the level of preparedness and progress at each designated location. These visits are expected to provide a clearer picture of implementation timelines and any outstanding requirements at council level.

The solar energy initiative forms part of a broader energy diversification strategy aimed at strengthening local energy resilience. Authorities expect the programme to contribute to increased economic activity within the province, with particular benefits anticipated for small-scale enterprises that rely on more stable and affordable power sources.
