CDF Water Project Cuts Girls' Absenteeism at Kasangani Primary
A newly installed water reticulation system at Kasangani Primary School in Chama District is reducing absenteeism among girls and improving menstrual hygiene management, following its commissioning under the 2024 Constituency Development Fund.
The K297,095 project, delivered by DIMVI General and Agro Suppliers, has separated the school's water supply from that of the surrounding community, ending years of disruption caused by a shared borehole that frequently broke down.
Kasangani senior teacher Karen Nalungwe said the development had transformed conditions for pupils, particularly girls. She explained that the school now had four dedicated water points and had set up a bathing shelter and tub for girls during their menstrual cycles.
"Previously girls would not attend class during their monthly menstrual cycle because we did not have enough water at school. But with the coming of the water, absenteeism has reduced because our girls have access to water throughout," she said.
Chama Town Council Assistant Civil Engineer Japhet Goma confirmed the system comprises a 10,000-litre tank serving 10 water points, with four at the school, three in the community and three kiosks in the village.
