More Than 35,000 Cholera Jabs Delivered to Lusaka Clinics Ahead of Mass Vaccination Drive

A consignment of over 35,000 oral cholera vaccine doses has been distributed to the UNZA Clinic and Kalingalinga Clinic in preparation for a mass immunisation campaign set to launch tomorrow.

Lusaka Province Health Director Dr. Simulyamana Choonga confirmed that the campaign will focus on university students and residents living in the areas surrounding the University of Zambia campus.

Dr. Choonga said the provincial health office has been working closely with UNZA's administration, student representatives, and other key partners to ensure that trained health personnel are in place to both mobilise the public and carry out the vaccinations efficiently.

The four-day exercise is designed to reduce the risk of cholera outbreaks by building immunity among students and community members in the targeted areas.

In a separate update, Dr. Choonga revealed that four new cholera infections had been confirmed in Lusaka within the previous 24-hour period — three originating from the Old Kanyama area and one from Mazyopa. While the numbers remain limited, the fresh cases underline the ongoing need for preventative action.

Residents across Lusaka were urged to take basic precautions seriously, including drinking only clean and treated water and ensuring that household and community waste is disposed of appropriately.

Health authorities say the vaccination campaign represents a proactive step in containing the spread of the disease before it gains further traction in densely populated parts of the capital.
