Zamtel Upgrades 600 Towers, Targets 1,200 by Year-End
Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati says Zamtel has upgraded 600 communication towers out of a targeted 1,200 across the country.
Mr Mutati stated that the remaining 600 towers are expected to be upgraded by the end of this year.
He was speaking in Parliament while responding to a question from Shangombo Constituency Member of Parliament Mubika Mubika, who sought clarification on whether the constituency will benefit from the communication towers upgrade programme.
Mr Mutati explained that the upgrades involve transitioning towers from 2G to 4G technology, aimed at improving communication systems, particularly in rural parts of Zambia.
He further revealed that Airtel will upgrade 407 towers and assured Members of Parliament that they will be informed about the specific locations where the upgrades will take place.
The nationwide upgrade programme is part of government's efforts to expand digital connectivity and bridge the communication gap between urban and rural areas.
