6,000 Runners to Honour Zambia's Founding Father at 2026 Kenneth Kaunda Marathon

Lusaka is preparing to welcome 6,000 runners for the 2026 Kenneth Kaunda Marathon, set to take place on April 28th in a celebration of sport, health, and national heritage.

The event carries a total budget of K6.5 million, with K3.5 million already secured through corporate partnerships. Professional Insurance has come on board as headline sponsor, contributing K2 million, while Stanbic Bank has committed K1.5 million as gold sponsor — a show of private sector confidence in the marathon's growing profile.

Speaking at the sponsorship unveiling, Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba underscored the significance of the occasion, describing the marathon as both a tribute to Zambia's founding President and a platform for promoting sports tourism across the country. "This is an important event for the Zambian people," he said, pointing to its dual role in honouring Kenneth Kaunda's legacy while driving economic activity through sport.

Lusaka Fitness Squad President Katai Chola struck a longer-term note, highlighting the marathon's potential as a vehicle for public health. With non-communicable diseases placing an increasing burden on communities across Zambia, he argued that events of this kind play a meaningful role in raising awareness of healthy and active living.

Perhaps the most ambitious vision came from Zambia Athletics President Major Bernard Bwalya, who confirmed that securing World Athletics certification remains a firm target — a step that would elevate the marathon to internationally recognised competition status and open the door to elite global participation.
