Zambia Opens Upgraded Nakonde Border Post to Boost Regional Trade

President Hakainde Hichilema yesterday commissioned Phase One of the upgraded Nakonde One Stop Border Post, marking a significant milestone in Zambia's drive to unlock its economic potential and strengthen regional trade ties.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Nakonde, President Hichilema acknowledged that Zambia had long failed to fully capitalise on the border's strategic position, but said the modernised facility would change that. Equipped with advanced scanners capable of processing up to 60 trucks per hour, the upgraded post is designed to dramatically accelerate cross-border clearance times and boost revenue collection — with proceeds earmarked for critical public services including education.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga said the facility would dismantle longstanding trade barriers between Zambia and Tanzania, while creating new commercial opportunities for clearing agencies on both sides of the border. Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi paid tribute to the British Government for its financial support in delivering the project.

TradeMark Africa Chief Executive Officer David Beer said the upgraded post would enhance efficiency along the strategically vital Dar es Salaam Corridor — a key artery for landlocked Zambia's access to international markets. British High Commissioner Rebecca Terzeon echoed that sentiment, stressing that stronger regional trade links are essential to sustainable economic growth and that Zambia is well-placed to benefit.

Muchinga Province Minister Njavwa Simutowe described Nakonde as a gateway that has long punched below its weight and suggested that era is now firmly over.
