Police Investigate Incident at UTH Mortuary
Lusaka police are investigating an unusual incident after a man was discovered bathing unclothed in the mortuary at the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The individual, identified only as Michael and believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, was found in the facility's body preparation area.
According to police sources citing witness accounts, hospital staff discovered Michael in the mortuary's washing area and immediately contacted authorities. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to Kabwata Police Station.
An eyewitness described the discovery: "Initially we were frightened, but when we approached closer, we realized he appeared very scared himself. We couldn't locate any security officers immediately, so we detained him ourselves and searched for mortuary staff. Together, we escorted the suspect to the hospital's police post."
Zambia Police Service spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident and provided additional context.
"According to his relatives, this individual has a diagnosed mental health condition," Mr Chilabi explained. "He was indeed found bathing in the area where bodies are prepared. When we contacted his family, they came to Kabwata Police Station, identified him as their relative, and confirmed his mental health status."
