Zambia Records 639 Cholera Cases, 10 Deaths Since Outbreak Began

Minister of Health Elijah Muchima says as of January 15 this year, the country recorded a cumulative total of 639 cholera cases, with 614 recoveries and 10 deaths.

The most recent death was recorded on January 12, 2026, in Nakonde District.

Speaking at a media briefing, Dr Muchima said the outbreak has largely been concentrated in Northern Province, particularly in Mpulungu, Nsama and Senga Hill districts, which together have reported more than 501 cases.

Other affected provinces include Southern Province with 44 cases, Copperbelt with 37, Lusaka with 41, Muchinga with eight, North-Western with five and Central Province with two cases.

To date, no cholera cases have been reported in Luapula, Western or Eastern provinces, where enhanced surveillance and preparedness measures are in place.

Dr Muchima said there are currently 17 patients admitted in Lusaka District and disclosed that the ministry plans to administer oral cholera vaccines to 500 inmates in Monze.

Meanwhile, Zambia recorded 241 confirmed measles cases between January and December 2025. Dr Muchima said targeted vaccination activities and intensified surveillance are underway to prevent further spread.

On Mpox, Dr Muchima revealed that Zambia has tested more than 2,000 suspected cases since the first confirmed case in October 2024, of which 367 have been confirmed.

The country continues to maintain strong polio surveillance through active case search and environmental sampling.
