Mingomba Mine Hailed as a Flagship Project

President Hichilema has hailed the Mingomba Copper Mine in Chililabombwe, Copperbelt, as a flagship project that will cement the Zambia–USA partnership. Shaft-sinking is set to begin next year, and once fully operational the mine is expected to become Zambia’s largest copper producer, delivering over 400,000 metric tons annually.

Kobold Metals CEO Dr. Kurt House updated the President during a meeting at State House, expressing confidence that the mine could rank among Africa’s biggest copper operations. He noted that the Mingomba deposit is one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper resources, with 120 kilometres drilled over the past two and a half years.

President Hichilema emphasised the project’s role in revitalising bilateral relations with the United States. “It is our duty, those of us who are now in these roles, to keep this partnership going,” he said.

Linking the development to UPND’s 2021 economic reconstruction agenda, the President underlined mining as a key driver of growth, while urging companies to uphold safe and legal practices and respect license integrity.

ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson Phesto Musonda described the project as excellent, with employment expected to reach 700.

The Mingomba project is being positioned as a milestone in Zambia’s mining revival, one that could help Zambia become a global mining powerhouse.
