Archbishop Urges National Healing as the Nation Prepares Lungu Funeral

Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kasma, Most Reverend Ignatius Chama calls for national unity as the nation prepares to lay Edgar Lungu to rest.

The Archbishop has spoken out against divisive comments following the death of former President Edgar Lungu, urging the nation to honour his memory with dignity rather than sowing discord.

Archbishop Chama used his weekly radio programme "Ishwiw Lyaka Kachema" on Radio Lutanda to condemn what he described as "reckless and harmful" statements circulating on social media about the late president's passing.

"This is a national duty. Whatever we say or do during this period should bring healing, not confusion," the Archbishop said during the broadcast. "We risk losing the spiritual and moral opportunity to unite as a nation if we choose disunity and half-truths in our words and actions."

The Archbishop emphasised that the responsibility for according a former head of state proper funeral rites belongs to the entire nation, not just the government.

Archbishop Chama warned that insensitive remarks risk causing additional pain to the bereaved family while damaging the legacy of the late president. He called on the nation to use this moment as an opportunity for national healing rather than division.

The Archbishop's intervention comes as funeral arrangements are being finalised, with the government pledging to accord the former president a state funeral befitting his status as a former head of state.
