Zambian Air Force to Harvest 700 Tonnes of Maize to Boost Food Security
The Zambian Air Force (ZAF) is set to harvest over 700 tonnes of maize in Lufwanyama District during the 2024/2025 farming season, contributing to national food security and supporting regional supply chains amid ongoing drought conditions.
Following President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive for the defence forces to assist in agricultural production, ZAF mobilised efforts as part of the national drought disaster response. Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma, during an inspection of the Lufwanyama farm, stated that the anticipated bumper harvest will help reduce the cost of mealie meal, a staple commodity for Zambian households.
Lufuma reaffirmed the defence force’s commitment to delivering on the presidential initiative, noting that ZAF’s involvement in agriculture is a strategic step toward stabilising food availability across the country.
Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo echoed these sentiments, emphasising that ensuring the affordability of mealie meal remains a top priority for the government. Meanwhile, ZAF Commander Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni revealed that plans are underway to begin winter maize cultivation through irrigation, taking advantage of the farm’s proximity to the Kafue River to increase yields year-round.
