Gender-Based Violence Cases Rise by 15.2%, Reaching Over 11,000 in Q1

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, 29 April, by Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, 11,177 Gender-based violence (GBV) cases were reported countrywide in the first quarter of 2025.

The latest figures represent a 15.5% increase compared to the 9,700 reported cases during the same period in 2024.

“Of the total cases reported, 7,170 cases (64%) were classified as criminal, while 4,007 cases (36%) were non-criminal in nature, the quarter also recorded 29 murder cases related to GBV, the same number as the previous year,” continued Hamoonga.

Physical abuse remained the most common form of GBV, with 3,881 cases, making up 34.7% of the total reported. However, 2,029 cases (equivalent to 28.3% of all cases) of economic abuse were recorded.

There was a slight reduction in reported sexual offences, registering 941 in Q1 2025, up from 972 as reported in Q1 2024.

The Police Spokesperson noted that while the increase may partly reflect improved public confidence in reporting, “it also underscores the urgent need for enhanced prevention efforts.”

Hamoonga concluded by reaffirming the Zambia Police Service’s steadfast commitment to combating GBV through strengthened community awareness, enhanced reporting mechanisms, continuous stakeholder engagement, and the provision of counselling to those affected.
