Seventeen Injured as Bus Overturns in Chisamba

Seventeen passengers sustained injuries after a bus operated by Victoria Bus Services overturned in Chisamba area yesterday morning.

The Zambia Police Service reported that the accident occurred around 06:00 hours along the Great North Road when the Scania bus, registration number ABP 7797, was heading toward Kabwe from Lusaka.

Out of sixty passengers on board, forty-three escaped unhurt while seventeen, including a six-month-old infant, sustained injuries.

The injured passengers were rushed to Liteta Hospital, where five, including the infant, remain admitted. Twelve have since been discharged after receiving medical treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed, causing the bus to veer off the road and overturn.

The Zambia Police Service has launched investigations into the incident and urged all road users to exercise caution, adhere to prescribed speed limits, and observe traffic rules to prevent similar occurrences.

The accident comes during the festive season, a period typically marked by increased traffic volumes on Zambia's roads as people travel to various destinations for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Police have repeatedly warned drivers against speeding and reckless driving, particularly during the busy holiday period when roads experience heavy traffic.

Investigations into the accident continue.
