LAZ Denounces Violence at Chiwempala Market

Legal and political figures have spoken out against Saturday's chaotic scenes in Chingola that saw President Hakainde Hichilema cut short his address at Chiwempala Market.

Police confirmed that a group of youths caused disruptions around 14:00 hours, leading to property damage and attacks on individuals before the President was forced to leave.

Law Association of Zambia President Lungisani Zulu acknowledged that holding leaders accountable is a fundamental right, but stressed that resorting to violence undermines democratic progress.

He noted that destroying property diverts scarce national resources away from critical areas like healthcare, education, and infrastructure towards repairs and replacements.

Mr Zulu emphasised the importance of respecting the presidency and following lawful channels for expressing concerns, particularly with the nation heading towards polls in August 2026.
