Namwala Farmers Launch Beef Exports to DRC in Push Toward $1 Billion Industry
Livestock farmers in Namwala District have achieved a major breakthrough by exporting beef to the Democratic Republic of Congo, advancing Zambia's efforts to diversify its economy through non-traditional exports.
This week marks the shipment of 40 metric tonnes of beef in the inaugural consignment. Local farmer Kelvin Puuka of Dodo Beef Compartment is supplying 25 cattle for the export. Speaking during the loading process, Mr. Puuka commended the government for facilitating access to international markets for Zambian producers.
Dr. Harrison Chiwawa, Namwala District Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator, confirmed the cattle will be transported to Kalomo for processing before export. He stressed that all animals meet rigorous international standards and have undergone thorough disease screenings by the Veterinary Department, which has certified both the livestock and facilities as disease-free.
This development aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema's ambitious vision to establish a $1 billion beef export industry. The initiative forms a cornerstone of Zambia's economic diversification strategy, aimed at reducing dependency on traditional exports while strengthening the country's position in global trade markets. The successful launch of these exports represents a promising step toward transforming Zambia's agricultural sector into a competitive international force.
