1.2 Million Zambians Are HIV Positive

The Ministry of Health has announced that over 1.2 million Zambians are currently living with HIV, with over 970,000 on anti-retroviral therapy.

The Ministry also announced that 43,000 new HIV infection cases are being detected annually, an alarming rate of increase. The majority of those being affected are young people, leading to questions over whether there is enough being done to encourage safe sex practices.

 

Dr Malama, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary In-Charge of Technical Services, was speaking at the University of Lusaka’s Bauleni Campus on ‘Public Health Day’ when he made the announcement, he encouraged all students to try to adopt more positive behavioural change.
