EU Council President Congratulates President Hichilema on Re-Election

European Council President António Costa has congratulated President Hakainde Hichilema on his re-election, while reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Zambia.

In a letter to President Hichilema, Mr Costa described Zambia as a “close and reliable partner” of the European Union and said relations between the two sides were founded on mutual respect and shared support for multilateralism and the rules-based international order.

Mr Costa said the EU welcomed the strong relationship developed with Zambia and looked forward to deepening cooperation during President Hichilema’s next term.

He also highlighted Zambia’s role in regional and international affairs, saying continued cooperation could help advance regional peace and stability.

The European Union deployed an Election Observation Mission to Zambia for the election, which is expected to publish a final report in the coming months containing recommendations for strengthening future electoral processes.

Mr Costa reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to further developing relations with Zambia and said he looked forward to working closely with President Hichilema in pursuit of their shared objectives.
