Government Plans to Expand Small-Scale Mining Access in Luanshya

President Hakainde Hichilema says the Government is developing plans to grant small-scale miners in Luanshya access to selected mine dumpsites as part of efforts to formalise the sector and improve safety standards.

Speaking during a public engagement in Luanshya, the President said the initiative would mirror the model introduced in Chingola, enabling small-scale miners to operate legally while creating greater economic opportunities for local communities.

President Hichilema also highlighted a series of development projects undertaken by the UPND administration in the district, including the revival of Shaft 28 and support for the establishment of an ethanol plant and an explosives manufacturing company, which are expected to create employment and stimulate economic activity.

He added that the Government is working to improve Luanshya's sewerage system and road network, while also addressing outstanding concerns affecting former employees of Mpelembe Drilling Company.

The President encouraged residents to support the continuation of the district's development agenda in the forthcoming election.

Meanwhile, pupils in Luanshya thanked President Hichilema for introducing the Free Education Policy and the school feeding programme, which they said have improved access to education and supported learners across the district.
