Mundubile Splashes Millions on Election Court Battle
Defeated presidential candidate Brian Mundubile is pressing ahead with a legal challenge to President Hakainde Hichilema's re-election. He has reportedly engaged lawyers Chifumu Banda and Bonaventure Mutale who have been paid in the region of US$750,000 each to lead the challenge. The figures are already stirring debate over the resources being poured into contesting the result when many voices across the political divide have called on the nation to move forward.
Mr Mundubile, who stood on the NRPUP ticket, rejected the results just hours after voting closed. His early dismissal of the outcome came well before the Electoral Commission of Zambia had completed its national count, which ultimately returned President Hichilema as the winner.
State House has said Mr Mundubile is free to petition through the courts. Yet his stance has left him increasingly isolated, with alliance partners such as the Resolute Party and NRPUP President Ezra Tembo conceding defeat, and Tonse Secretary General Zumani Zimba urging dialogue and reconciliation over a divisive court battle.
