Editorial: Can Mundubile Deliver on Anti-Corruption While Questions Loom Over His Own Record?

Brian Mundubile’s latest campaign message is built around a promise of a corruption-free government, with the opposition figure declaring that thieves would have no place in his administration and that wrongdoers would be exposed. 

However, while his message is clear, his remarks offered no concrete details about the policies or legal reforms that would set his approach apart from current anti-corruption efforts. 

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, 22 July, Mundubile said he and Makebi Zulu were not interested in protecting thieves in government, claiming “we will not save you.” Mundubile said “If you are a thief you cannot be in our government,” adding that his administration would not shield supporters who engaged in corruption.

However, Mundubile’s message comes as he faces ongoing questions by the Anti-Corruption Commission over corrupt road contracts awarded whilst he was in government. The investigation has drawn attention to the NRPUP leader over the gap between calls for transparency and personal responsibility. 

With corruption scandals having overshadowed the previous administration, Mundubile now faces the challenge of convincing voters that his message will translate into meaningful change.
