Mulungushi Textiles Dispatches Nearly Two Million Metres of Fabric Since April Restart

Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles has printed and dispatched almost two million metres of fabric since production resumed in April 2026, marking an early milestone in the revival of the Kabwe plant after more than two decades of closure.

The facility, dormant for over 21 years, has been rehabilitated and fitted with modern machinery, replacing the obsolete equipment that previously stood idle on the factory floor.

Central Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe, who toured the plant, said the new equipment is capable of producing around 20,000 metres of fabric per day. He described the output of two million metres in just two to three months as a significant achievement for a factory that had been out of operation for so long, adding that the state-of-the-art machinery has restored production and expanded manufacturing capacity.

General Manager Brigadier General Emmanuel Simenti confirmed that every metre printed so far has already been dispatched, with payments received as orders leave the plant. He said production has run smoothly since the restart.

The company has also doubled its printing capability, adding a digital printer alongside its main machine. The digital unit handles smaller orders of around 2,000 metres and offers branding services for T-shirts and other garments, while the larger machine processes orders of between 20,000 and 50,000 metres.

The figures offer a tangible early measure of the plant's recovery.
