Government Commissions Two Dams in Pemba and Kalomo Districts

President HH’s Government has commissioned two dams in Pemba and Kalomo Districts to enhance water supply and support economic activities in surrounding communities, as rainfall becomes increasingly unpredictable.

Water Development and Sanitation Permanent Secretary Mr Kamanga said the facilities will provide water for communities, livestock and agriculture in the two districts.

The dams are expected to enable productive activities to continue throughout the year, providing farmers with greater access to water during prolonged dry spells and helping to strengthen the resilience of rural communities.

Mr Kamanga said the projects demonstrate cooperation between the Government, the private sector and other stakeholders in line with Zambia’s Eighth National Development Plan.

The investment comes as parts of Southern Province continue to face challenges associated with erratic rainfall and extended periods of drought, increasing the importance of reliable water infrastructure for agriculture and rural livelihoods.

Mr Kamanga urged communities, traditional leaders and local authorities to protect and maintain the new facilities to ensure they continue providing economic and social benefits for future generations.

The Permanent Secretary also handed over houses to families displaced by the construction of the dams.
