Government Commissions Two Rehabilitated Dams in Chipata

The government has commissioned the Lunyike and Feni dams in Luangeni Constituency, Chipata District, in a move expected to benefit more than 43,400 people and strengthen farming in the area.

The two dams were rehabilitated by Construction for Africa and Sable Construction Company at a cost of K33.6 million. Officials say the improved infrastructure will give surrounding communities a dependable water supply for the first time in years.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Permanent Secretary Romas Kamanga said the dams would provide reliable water for domestic use, livestock, irrigation and aquaculture across the constituency. He expressed confidence that residents would use the upgraded facilities to raise agricultural output and improve their livelihoods.

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Paul Thole, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Provincial Director of Finance Vincent Sampa, said the rehabilitation of the two dams would help improve the welfare of people in the area by supporting both household needs and farming.

Speaking for the 22 headmen under Paramount Chief Mpezeni, Philemon Chirwa thanked the government for the project. He said communities had struggled with persistent water shortages before the works were carried out, and that the restored dams would make a real difference to daily life, giving families easier access to water for their homes, their animals and their fields.

Officials say the two dams form part of wider efforts to expand rural water infrastructure and support agriculture across Eastern Province.
