South Korea Proposes $900 Million Solar Project in Latest Investment Push

South Korean investors have tabled a proposal for a 500-megawatt solar power project valued at approximately $900 million, in what would represent one of the largest renewable energy investments in the country's history.

The proposal was presented during a meeting in Lusaka, where Secretary to Cabinet Patrick Kangwa led a government delegation in talks with a South Korean team exploring investment opportunities.

The project is structured in ten phases of 50 megawatts each and would utilise Korean solar photovoltaic technology, with implementation carried out jointly by Korean and Zambian technical teams.

The talks come less than two weeks after Deputy Secretary to Cabinet for Finance and Economic Development Siazongo Siakalenge led a delegation to Seoul, where he called for deeper economic cooperation between the two countries.

A project of this scale would make a substantial contribution to closing the generation gap — and would add to a growing pipeline of renewable energy proposals that the government has been actively courting. The government said it welcomed the proposal and that discussions are continuing.
