Government Establishes Landmark Tribunal to Strengthen Mining Sector Governance
The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has achieved a significant milestone in strengthening Zambia's mining sector through the establishment of the Mines Appeals Tribunal, demonstrating the government's commitment to transparent and equitable resource management.
Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe announced this progressive initiative during an induction programme for tribunal members in Chongwe District, emphasising the government's dedication to protecting the rights and legitimate expectations of all mining stakeholders.
The tribunal represents a forward-thinking approach to dispute resolution, providing a specialized forum that ensures fair treatment for investors, communities, and other stakeholders. Minister Kabuswe highlighted that the comprehensive induction programme equips tribunal members with essential skills and knowledge, ensuring they can effectively execute their mandate with professionalism and expertise.
The government's commitment extends beyond establishment, with Minister Kabuswe reaffirming full support for the tribunal as an independent, credible, and professional institution. This support underscores the administration's recognition that robust governance mechanisms are essential for sustainable sector growth.
Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Hapenga Kabeta contextualized the tribunal's importance, noting that increased investment and expansion of artisanal and small-scale mining activities have created greater opportunities alongside potential disputes. The tribunal's fair and efficient dispute management mechanism will safeguard investor confidence and maintain community trust—critical foundations for continued sector development.
This initiative reflects the government's proactive strategy in creating institutional frameworks that balance economic growth with stakeholder protection, positioning Zambia as a leader in responsible mining governance across the region.
