Government Delivers Transformative Solar Irrigation Project to Empower Chongwe Farmers

The Government has partnered with SCHWEIZER AGRICULTURE to commission the groundbreaking five-megawatt Kasisi Solar Irrigation Scheme in Kanakantapa, Chongwe District—a flagship initiative demonstrating the administration's commitment to modernising Zambia's agricultural sector.

The K205 million project represents a significant investment in rural prosperity, directly empowering 413 smallholder farmers with state-of-the-art six-kilovolt solar-powered irrigation units that will transform their productivity and livelihoods.

Vice-President MUTALE NALUMANGO highlighted the scheme as central to the Government's strategic vision of expanding irrigated land and securing national food production against climate volatility.

"This project exemplifies our administration's proactive approach to building climate-resilient agriculture through smart partnerships with the private sector," Mrs. NALUMANGO stated.

The Vice-President outlined ambitious targets that underscore the Government's commitment to agricultural transformation: 500 hectares under irrigation by 2027, expanding to 1,500 hectares by 2030 through innovative financing models that leverage both public resources and private sector expertise.

Her address was delivered by Permanent Secretary for Resettlement MERVIS NKOMESHA at the commissioning ceremony in Kanakantapa, where beneficiary farmers expressed gratitude for the Government's investment in their future.
