Musokotwane Calls for Public Accountability in Government Spending

Government has called on stakeholders to continue monitoring public programmes, including infrastructure works, pensions administration, SME financing, public service delivery and social interventions.

Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane says by tracking programmes diligently, citizens will help safeguard public resources and ensure that every kwacha delivers value where it matters most.

Dr Musokotwane said the progress the country is witnessing was not achieved by central government alone but is the outcome of an economic management ecosystem functioning with coherence, purpose and accountability.

He said statutory bodies and economic agencies under the Ministry of Finance and National Planning are expected to adopt a more forward-leaning posture in reporting their performance and milestone achievements.

Dr Musokotwane announced that government has released K100 million for the recapitalization of Zambia Railways Limited, describing it as a pivotal investment in modernizing the country's transport and logistics architecture.

He explained that rail is the most efficient and cost-effective way to move bulk cargo, especially for a landlocked economy like Zambia.

According to the Office of the Secretary to the Treasury, the Ministry of Finance released K15.56 billion in November 2025 to sustain public service delivery, dismantle arrears, and ensure tangible results for citizens.

Of this amount, K2.43 billion went to transfers, subsidies and social benefits, while over K2 billion supported government programmes and operations. An additional K5 billion was spent on debt service and arrears.
