Government Sets January 10, 2026 Deadline to Clear All Outstanding Farmer Payments
The Ministry of Finance and National Planning has announced that all outstanding payments to farmers who supplied maize to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) will be fully settled by January 10, 2026, bringing relief to the agricultural sector.
In a statement released Tuesday, Finance Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane acknowledged that delays in payments have been regrettable but assured the nation that the government remains committed to honouring its obligations to hardworking farmers.
"The outstanding payments to all farmers who supplied maize to FRA will be fully settled by 10th January, 2026," Dr. Musokotwane stated, emphasising the administration's recognition of the critical role these funds play in supporting rural households and enabling preparations for the upcoming farming season.
The Minister explained that the FRA will continue receiving funds from financing institutions alongside proceeds from ongoing maize sales, enabling payments to be made on a rolling basis in tranches. Farmers will receive their payments during this interim period, ahead of the final settlement date.
President Hakainde Hichilema's administration has prioritised timely farmer payments as essential to maintaining national food security and economic stability. The government's commitment to clearing these outstanding obligations demonstrates its dedication to supporting the agricultural sector, which remains the backbone of Zambia's economy.
Dr. Musokotwane joined President Hichilema in thanking farmers for their patience and continued contribution to national development, noting that their efforts are crucial to sustaining livelihoods across the country.
The Ministry has promised to issue further updates as necessary, ensuring transparency throughout the payment process and reinforcing the government's accountability to the farming community.
