Copper Queens Miss Golden Opportunity Against Nine-Player Nigeria

Zambia head coach Nora Häuptle believes the Copper Queens let a golden opportunity slip away after a frustrating 1-0 defeat to defending champions Nigeria in their Women's Africa Cup of Nations Group B encounter.

Despite Nigeria being reduced to nine players before half-time, Zambia could not capitalise on their numerical advantage. Häuptle said her side produced a strong opening, controlled much of the contest and created attacking situations that forced the Super Falcons into costly fouls. However, one of Nigeria's few dangerous attacks proved decisive, leading to the only goal of the match.

At the break, Häuptle switched to a 4-4-2 formation in an effort to increase possession and stretch the Nigerian side. Instead, she felt the Copper Queens relied too heavily on long balls that played into Nigeria's hands.

"It was in our hands and we did not take the chance. Everything was there for us to beat Nigeria," Häuptle said after the match.

The Swiss coach added that Nigeria's starting line-up held no surprises, as her team had prepared thoroughly for the defending champions.

With qualification still within reach, Zambia's attention now turns to a must-win clash against Malawi on Wednesday 5 August. Häuptle insisted her players would give everything to secure the victory needed to reach the knockout stages.

Striker Racheal Kundananji urged supporters to continue believing in the team, insisting the Copper Queens still have the quality to progress, while defender Margaret Belemu called for improvements at both ends of the pitch and backed Zambia to bounce back.
