FAZ to Turn Heroes' Acre into Football Museum

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has unveiled plans to transform Heroes' Acre into a football museum to preserve the memory of the nation’s fallen football heroes. FAZ President Andrew Kamanga confirmed that the association is working closely with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts to bring the project to life.

Speaking during a wreath-laying ceremony commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the Gabon Air Disaster, Kamanga said the museum would not only honour the late Chipolopolo players but also serve as a tourist attraction, educating future generations about Zambia’s rich football heritage. He reiterated that securing a place at the FIFA World Cup remains a core ambition for FAZ, viewing it as a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in 1993.

Family representative Tamara Mtonga thanked FAZ for its ongoing efforts to commemorate the tragedy each year, ensuring that the heroes’ legacy remains alive. Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZASPOFA) Patron Peter Makembo also called on football supporters to continue remembering and celebrating the contributions of the fallen players.

The proposed museum forms part of wider efforts to strengthen national pride in Zambian football, while offering a permanent space for reflection, remembrance and education.
