Five Nominated MPs Sworn In As New Parliament Takes Shape
Five nominated Members of Parliament were sworn into office on Monday, taking and subscribing the Oath of Office as required by the Constitution of Zambia.
Mulambo Haimbe, Noel Nkhoma, Dr Gilbert Siame, Dr Roma Chilengi and Mubita Anakoka pledged to uphold the Constitution, bear true allegiance to the Republic and the President, and preserve, protect and defend the Constitution as by law established.
The oath also binds them to confidentiality. Each undertook not to reveal or transmit information brought to them by reason of their office, except in the discharge of their duties or with the authority of the President.
More swearing-in will follow. Members nominated under the proportional representation system are still to take their oaths, as are the remaining presidential nominees.
The exercise is the first under the 2025 amendments to the Constitution, which reshape the composition of the National Assembly in two significant ways. The President may now nominate up to 11 Members, and a proportional representation tier has been created comprising 20 women, 15 youths and five persons with disabilities.
Together with the Speaker, the Vice-President and the First Deputy Speaker, the House will number 280.
