Authorities Confirms Detainee Status, Affirm Legal Rights

Police have apprehended suspected militia members and several persons of interest during a joint security operation at a premise in Lusaka's Kabulonga area.

Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa said the operation was carried out following surveillance of the individuals over several years and, more intensively, in recent months. He said some of those detained were allegedly linked to military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps, which he described as a serious threat to State security.

According to Mr. Kangwa, the suspects were found in possession of high-grade military weapons, ammunition and other materials allegedly intended for use in armed insurrection. He said the occupants opened fire on law enforcement officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire. Several restricted weapons were seized, some suspects were arrested at the scene, and others fled, their whereabouts currently unknown.

Those apprehended include George Chisanga, Bishop Trevor Mwamba, Simon Phiri, Richard Banda, Francis Mulenga and Patrick Mwansa, all held in lawful custody at police stations across Lusaka. Mr. Kangwa said NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile was also found at the scene, adding that some of those present were senior members of political parties. Speaking last night, Mr. Mundubile's running mate Makebi Zulu confirmed that the candidate was safe and in high spirits.

The operation appears to be linked to a separate case disclosed last week, in which three Zambians were arrested over alleged military-related training abroad, along with businessman Valden Findlay for alleged facilitation.

Mr. Kangwa stressed that all suspects have been charged and will be granted access to their lawyers and families, with due process observed. Investigations continue and the nation will be updated accordingly.
