Vice President Nalumango Hails Late Archbishop Mpundu As A Man Of Principle

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has paid tribute to the late Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Lusaka, Telesphore George Mpundu, describing him as a highly principled and devoted servant of God whose contribution to Zambia will never be forgotten.

Speaking after signing the Book of Condolences at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka, the Vice President called on national leaders to emulate the late Archbishop by standing firmly on principle and truth.

Mrs. Nalumango said Archbishop Mpundu was an honest, God-fearing and deeply spiritual leader who dedicated his life to serving both the Church and the nation. She noted that his passing was a great loss not only to the Catholic Church but to Zambia as a whole.

"He was a respected religious leader whose counsel and guidance touched many lives across generations," she said.

The Vice President said the late Archbishop would be remembered for his wisdom, humility and unwavering commitment to the moral and spiritual wellbeing of the country, as well as his lifelong promotion of peace, justice and unity.

In a personal reflection, Mrs. Nalumango revealed that Archbishop Mpundu had prayed for her during his final days, a gesture she said reflected his deep spirituality and compassion.

On behalf of Government and the people of Zambia, the Vice President conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, the clergy, the faithful and the Mpundu family.

Archbishop Emeritus Mpundu died last Saturday after an illness. The funeral Mass and burial are scheduled for today, May 21, 2026, at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka.
