Twenty arrested over Nkombo attack as President condemns electoral violence
Twenty suspected political cadres have been apprehended in Mazabuka in connection with an attack on former Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Gary Nkombo, who was assaulted yesterday morning while attempting to file his nomination as an independent parliamentary candidate.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo confirmed the arrests during a media briefing in Mazabuka, telling ZANIS that the suspects had been picked up to assist with investigations. He warned that police would remain vigilant and ensure law and order are maintained throughout the electoral process ahead of the August general election.
President Hakainde Hichilema has condemned the incident and made clear that the government will not tolerate electoral violence or disorder. The President responded to footage circulating in the media of the attempts to disrupt Mr Nkombo's nomination, describing the scenes as unacceptable, undemocratic and against the law.
He said he expected proper arrests to be made for those responsible, regardless of political affiliation or social standing. "Zambia is governed by laws, not intimidation, violence or mob action," the Head of State said.
He warned that anyone seeking to challenge the government's efforts to maintain electoral peace would face the full force of the law, adding that the position remains firm and unchanged.
The incident comes during the official nomination period, with the Electoral Commission of Zambia accepting filings from 18 to 22 May ahead of the 13 August general election.
