President Hichilema Calls for Free, Fair and Peaceful Polls Ahead of August Elections
President Hakainde Hichilema this morning called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to work hand-in-hand with the Government to deliver a free, fair, peaceful and credible election on 13 August.
Speaking at State House as he swore in Major Vincent Mukanda as ECZ Vice Chairperson and Zevyanji Sinkala as ECZ Commissioner, the President said the ECZ has a vital role to play in ensuring peace before, during and after the polls. "Democracy is anchored on choices," he said, emphasising the importance of strengthening Zambia's democratic dispensation.
President Hichilema appealed to political parties across the divide to promote peace, love and unity throughout the campaign period. Elections, he said, are a democratic opportunity for the people to choose their leaders, and politicians should compete to serve, not to spread violence, misinformation or hatred.
Reflecting on the UPND's first term, the President pointed to the Government's commitment to upholding the rule of law as central to attracting investment and rebuilding the economy. Since taking office, Zambia has secured over $12 billion in mining investment and successfully restructured its debt, reducing annual servicing costs from approximately $2.3 billion to around $900 million.
He further highlighted progress on opportunities for young Zambians, with 2.5 million children returned to school and 45,000 new teachers employed under the free education programme.
The President acknowledged that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East had limited some economic gains, but pledged to stabilise fuel prices and confirmed that the recent reduction in the monetary policy rate is expected to translate into lower interest rates for borrowers across the country.
