Government Launches Construction of 383-million USD Mpongwe Road Project
Construction of the Luansobe–Machiya and Mpongwe–Machiya–Ngabwe roads will begin, with the aim of advancing transport links between the Copperbelt and Central provinces.
Charles Milpuli, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister, said the project highlights Government’s commitment to supporting economic development and improving conditions for the local communities.
Mr Milupi adds that the project is being executed under a 25-year concession arrangement including three years of construction and two years of operation and maintenance.
At the influential ceremony in Mpongwe District, he encouraged contractors to adhere to timelines and produce quality results. In order to support national Zambian business, Mr Milupi said 23 million USD has been allocated within the project to local subcontractors, creating at least 500 direct jobs.
Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo affirms President Hakainde Hichilema has made good on his promise to traditional leaders and residents of Mpongwe in regard to road infrastructure development.
Mr Matambo said the project will grant the district more opportunity for trade and agricultural growth. The Minister added the road will further investment in mining via the movement of minerals to major commercial centres and export routes. Furthermore, communities will now have improved transport links to schools, health facilities and markets.
KPMM Zambia Limited Managing Director Kevin Twiddy said the project will consist of four major river bridges, toll gates and urban road works.
Mpongwe Member of Parliament Gregory Nkhowani said the project underlines the President’s wider goal to upgrade the road network nationwide.
