President Hichilema Makes Judicial Appointments Across Zambia's Senior Courts

President Hakainde Hichilema has announced a significant series of judicial appointments spanning Zambia's senior courts, acting on the recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission and subject to ratification by the National Assembly.

At the Supreme Court level, Mr. Justice Chalwe Farai Mchenga S.C., Lady Justice Abha Patel S.C., Lady Justice Getrude Chawatama, and Mr. Butler Sitali have all been appointed as Judges. The Constitutional Court will be strengthened by the addition of Lady Justice Pixie Yangailo, Mr. Justice Vincent Siloka, and Ms. Getrude Imbwae.

At the Court of Appeal, Mr. Justice Charles Zulu has been appointed Deputy President, joined by six new Judges: Lady Justice Sharon Kaunda Newa, Lady Justice Irene Zeko Mbewe, Lady Justice Bridget Chilombo Maka, Lady Justice Ruth Chibbabuka, Lady Justice Concepter Chinyawa Zulu, and Lady Justice Susan Wanjelani.

The largest cohort of appointments was made to the High Court for Zambia, where 26 new Judges have been named, significantly expanding the bench's capacity to hear cases across the country.

In a separate but related development, the President has made two appointments to the Electoral Commission of Zambia in accordance with the ECZ Act No. 25 of 2016. Major General Vincent Mukanda (Rtd) has been appointed Deputy Chairperson, with Mr. Zevyanji Sinkala named as Commissioner.

All appointments remain subject to ratification by the National Assembly.
