HH Assures UN of Free and Fair 2026 Elections
President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed Zambia's commitment to holding free, fair and peaceful general elections in 2026, telling United Nations representatives that peace is a fundamental prerequisite for credible electoral outcomes.
The President was speaking at State House when senior UN agency officials paid a courtesy call to update him on their programmes in Zambia, including support for the formulation of the Ninth National Development Plan.
President Hichilema described the UN as a trusted partner and stressed the importance of continued collaboration as the world navigates shifting geopolitical pressures, international conflicts and economic uncertainty. He said Zambia would continue to rely on the UN family for support across multiple sectors, while emphasising that partnerships must evolve to meet changing global realities.
The President also renewed his call for greater African representation on the UN Security Council, arguing that the continent deserves a stronger voice in global decision-making.
On the domestic front, he highlighted government efforts to maintain macroeconomic stability, underlining the link between peace, investor confidence and sustained economic growth. He also expressed appreciation for UN support in the health sector, reiterating that access to healthcare is a fundamental right for every Zambian.
UN Resident Coordinator Beatrice Mutali reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to supporting Zambia's electoral process and commended the government for maintaining an open and collaborative relationship with the UN system.
