Patriotic Front Sets Four-Day Deadline for Leadership Convention

The Patriotic Front's acting president, Given Lubinda, has announced the party will hold its long-delayed general conference within four days, setting an accelerated timetable to resolve months of internal turmoil that have left Zambia's main opposition party without settled leadership.

Lubinda, who has guided the party through a fractious transitional period, said further postponements would not be tolerated. He is expected to contest the presidency himself, with lawyer Makebi Zulu among the leading challengers.

The convention field is crowded. Other declared aspirants include former Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya, ex-Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, diplomat-turned-politician Emmanuel Mwamba, veteran party figure Greyford Monde, and Dr. Chishimba Kambwili, who has spoken of continuing the legacy of PF founder Michael Sata. The field has already shifted: Miles Sampa has withdrawn, Mutotwe Kafwaya has stepped aside, and Brian Mundubile has been barred from participating.

For the PF, the stakes are considerable. A disputed one risks deepening the divisions that have defined the party's recent turmoil.
