Electoral Commission Ready for Muchinda Ward By-Election
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has confirmed that preparations are complete ahead of the Muchinda Ward by-election taking place today, Thursday, February 12, in Serenje District, Central Province.
District Electoral Officer Stan Mwanakayaya said all polling staff have undergone training and are being deployed to designated voting centres across the ward. He confirmed that election materials have been received in full, adding that the district is well-positioned to deliver a smooth and orderly poll.
The by-election was triggered by the death of the ward's sitting councillor, who represented the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND). The seat is being contested by three political parties: the UPND, which is seeking to retain the ward; the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD); and United Progressive and Peaceful Zambia.
While ward-level by-elections typically attract modest national attention, they serve as important barometers of political sentiment between general elections. The contest offers an early indication of whether the ruling party continues to command grassroots support in Central Province, a region that has historically played a significant role in Zambia's electoral landscape.
The ECZ has urged registered voters in Muchinda Ward to turn out and exercise their democratic right, reminding them to carry valid voter registration documents to their designated polling stations.
Voting is expected to proceed peacefully, with results anticipated shortly after the close of polls.
