Government Orders Probe into Fast Depletion of Prepaid Electricity Units

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote has directed ZESCO and the Energy Regulation Board to investigate complaints about the rapid depletion of prepaid electricity units.

The two institutions have been given until March 16, 2026, to submit a comprehensive report on the matter, which has raised concerns among consumers across the country.

Minister Chikote made the announcement while delivering a ministerial statement in Parliament on Tuesday.

The Minister told MPs that Zambia's installed electricity generation capacity stands at 3,880 megawatts. Of this, 3,168 megawatts are generated by ZESCO Limited, while independent power producers contribute 712 megawatts.

However, due to hydrological and operational constraints, only 1,635 megawatts are currently available - less than half of the installed capacity.

Despite these constraints, Minister Chikote assured the nation that electricity supply hours are projected to be maintained at 24 hours per day.

The directive to investigate prepaid meter concerns comes as many Zambians have complained that their electricity units appear to run out faster than expected, raising questions about metering accuracy and tariff application.

The government's intervention signals recognition of consumer concerns and a commitment to ensuring transparency in the electricity supply system.
