President Hichilema Congratulates FDD Candidate on Chawama Victory

President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated the Forum for Democracy and Development and its candidate Bright Nundwe for winning the Chawama Constituency parliamentary by-election after a tightly contested race.

In a statement issued Friday morning, President Hichilema said that while every election must ultimately produce one winner, its deeper purpose is to strengthen harmony, peace, and unity among all citizens.

"We extend our congratulations to the Forum for Democracy and Development, and in particular to the winning candidate, Mr Bright Nundwe, for emerging victorious in the Chawama Constituency parliamentary by-election after a tightly contested race," the President stated.

He commended the UPND, all participating candidates, and the people of Chawama, whose collective commitment ensured that the democratic process functioned as it should.

President Hichilema also expressed appreciation to the Electoral Commission of Zambia and law enforcement agencies for conducting a transparent, orderly, and secure election.

"Their professionalism contributed to an environment in which the will of the people could be freely and peacefully expressed," he said.

Mr Nundwe contested under the FDD banner as part of the Tonse Alliance and emerged victorious in the nine-way race that saw independent candidates and representatives from various political parties compete for the seat that had been vacant since June 2025.

The by-election followed Parliament's decision to vacate the seat after former MP Tasila Lungu failed to return to Zambia following her father's death in South Africa.
